They’ve got robot dog security at the 15th National Games of China, among other wonders. The Games, which since its inauguration in 1959 has escalated in scope and stakes alike, is the athletic nucleus of the world’s second-most populated country.


  • The stakes: For Chinese weightlifters, the National Games mean more than any World Championships, or even the Olympics. There’s money on the line, and not enough to go around.

How it works: The best athletes from each province are selected for the National Team, but events like the National Games determine how funding is allocated to each province for upcoming years, which is used to prepare athletes for international comps like Worlds and the Olympics.


All to say, the National Games is a big deal. Here are the weightlifting results from the 15th edition of the event:
